Unplug from the Craziness – With a ‘Moment of Calm’

November 20, 2009

Here is a short film, an homage to nature, and moments of tranquility and calm. I was looking to unplug the viewer from the intensity, speed, and stresses of todays techo-society. Before I lived in Japan this music was an early introduction to me of the beauty and depth in Japanese traditional music, scroll-painting and haiku. These influences all informed my photography in Japan, even commercial and corporate projects, and still influence my still and film work today.

The musicians are truly extraordinary, Tony Scott, clarinet,  Shinichi Yuize, Koto, and Hozan Yamamoto, Shakuhachi. This improvisation was a very early effort, pioneering the fusion of instruments, and was recorded in 1964 in Japan.

Give it a minute to load and turn up your speakers.

‘Moment of Calm’ was filmed around my studio near Seattle, November 2009. Let me know how you like it.

Response has been wonderful to this, I’m happy to offer it, the modern world is so fast and so hectic, we can all use a moment to breathe and appreciate what we have.

This is my gift to you and message for the holidays; a Moment of Calm, of appreciation, and hopefully, of peace.

Thanks Natalie, happy you liked it. This was shot in Seattle, but having lived 8 years in Japan, my impression of Kyoto, Momeji, influence any project like this. The Koto and Shakuhachi players are brilliant masters of their craft.
