Unplug from the Craziness – With a ‘Moment of Calm’

November 20, 2009

Here is a short film, an homage to nature, and moments of tranquility and calm. I was looking to unplug the viewer from the intensity, speed, and stresses of todays techo-society. Before I lived in Japan this music was an early introduction to me of the beauty and depth in Japanese traditional music, scroll-painting and haiku. These influences all informed my photography in Japan, even commercial and corporate projects, and still influence my still and film work today.

The musicians are truly extraordinary, Tony Scott, clarinet,  Shinichi Yuize, Koto, and Hozan Yamamoto, Shakuhachi. This improvisation was a very early effort, pioneering the fusion of instruments, and was recorded in 1964 in Japan.

Give it a minute to load and turn up your speakers.

‘Moment of Calm’ was filmed around my studio near Seattle, November 2009. Let me know how you like it.

You Can Achieve Your Goal

November 15, 2009

“You can achieve you goal if you persistently pursue it”, this was the response of a 68 year old woman in South Korea who passed her country’s written drivers license exam on the 950th try. ( Time)

Irving Penn

This month we lost the masterful and brilliant photographer Irving Penn, gone at 92 -. I was fortunate, as a young man in New York, to work for a brief time in his studio. His respect for others, humility and perseverant spirit forever influenced my own approach to working. His art, always fresh, powerful, elegant and yet very real. I am grateful for having met him, and that his work will live on.

He will be missed and forever appreciated

The Good and Bad of Snow Leopard

October 1, 2009

Snow Leopard is the new operating system for Mac computers. I’ve been using Macs since the first in 1984 and have gone through some pretty brutal upgrades over time. This has been a much more positive experience. As always, it’s smart to back up important documents and files before any major changes like this. Once I back-up I checked the list below to see that my essential programs would be available to me. Some require updates, no big deal, it’s easy these days.

I completed the backup and it’s been great. Lots of enhancements, not the least of is that Safari now runs in 64 bit, much-much faster.

In The Groove

September 26, 2009

The rhythm of African drumming is intoxicating. Here’s a video experiment with my friend Thione Diop, a master drummer from Senegal. I studied drumming with his father and play Sabar style, what a wonderful opportunity and experience it was, great fun too. I’ll be showing more from Thione. Enjoy the groove.

Paula Scher and the Geography of Design

September 25, 2009

Paula Scher of Pentagram  speaks of her love for NY, as a diverse and exciting place to live and as an influence in her extraordinary work. Scher discusses the influence of New York City, its architecture, and especially its noise (the yelling!) on her design and typography. It’s a different take on how location influences one’s choices. Being an ex-New Yorker I found value in some of Paul’s points, in my case I’ve chosen differently, yet I have the utmost respect for her and her work.

My windmill changed my life

September 23, 2009

An inspiring read:

The TED Blog met with William Kamkwamba shortly after the publication of his autobiography, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. Here, he answers questions about his book, his life story, his plans for the future, and offers some inspiration to others who face poverty and struggle to achieve a dream.

Focusing on Green and Sustainable Industries

September 16, 2009

As the economy improves, with a number of indicators showing some light at the end of the tunnel, I will be focusing my creative energies more and more for green companies and sustainable industries that support people and our planet. I’ve always done annual reports , translating the details and stories of businesses into something more human, more humane, that readers can relate with. Updating this means including social media in the mix, photographing specifically for blogs, facebook, and  twitter. Companies are waking up to this with their use of social media to improve customer service and to have a dialog with their client base.

Stay tuned, some cool new developments are underway.
